BROWNSVILLE — Operation Lone Star, the annual emergency preparedness exercise to help South Texas communities get ready for disasters, is coming back to the Rio Grande Valley, beginning today.
The exercise brings free medical services including dental and vision screenings to all sites in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Webb counties.
The site for Cameron County Operation Lone Star this year is in Brownsville at Vela Middle School, 4905 Paredes Line Road.
Among the services to be provided without charge at all sites are immunizations for children, sports physicals, diabetic and blood pressure screenings, and hearing and vision screenings.
Dental services and vision exams for adults and children will be provided at PSJA High School in San Juan and Juarez-Lincoln High School in La Joya.
Preventive dental services for children will be at Ringgold Middle School in Rio Grande City.
The sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday.
Operation Lone Star is a collaborative effort by the Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Military Forces, Cameron County Health Department, Hidalgo County Health and Human Services, and the Laredo Health Department.
The exercise engages agency personnel and local service groups to provide free health services and emergency response and disaster recovery training to communities across South Texas.
