HARLINGEN — The first round of the South Texas Junior Golf Classic kicked off Saturday morning at Harlingen Country Club, with dozens of golfers from across the state ranging from 9-18 years of age taking the course.
After day one, defending champion Julie Lucio of Brownsville was the story, shooting a 74 to lead the Girls’ 15-18 division.
Lucio, who will be a junior at Hanna High School this coming school year, is coming off a solid run at the UIL state tournament back in April.
Meanwhile, Mariana Garcia of Brownsville was three strokes behind with a 77.
Also, Los Fresnos’ Brianna Garza and Weslaco’s Anika Hovda each shot a 78.
In the Boys’ 15-18 division, Harlingen High’s Cole Chavart and Dylan Martinez were in third and fourth place, respectively, and trailed Aaron Martinez, who was in first with a 71, and Jacob Daniel Serna, who was in second with a 73.
Play will resume today with golfers teeing off at 7:30 a.m.
