HARLINGEN — Downtown property owners are ready to speak up.
And it could have an impact on the fate of the Baxter Building.
The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs will hold a public hearing here Monday to ask residents for comments on area housing projects in which developers have requested federal tax credits to help fund construction.
In Harlingen, downtown merchants are focused on the proposed $4.5 million project to renovate the nine-story Baxter Building into a largely low-income apartment development.
Bill DeBrooke, chairman of the Harlingen Downtown Improvement District, said downtown property owners plan to “pack” the hearing set for 6 p.m. Monday at the Harlingen Cultural Arts Center, 576 76 Drive, next door to the Harlingen Public Library.
The public is invited to attend.
“People are going to ask about the project,” DeBrooke, who owns several downtown buildings, said yesterday.
