RAYMONDVILLE — Officials are ready to break ground on the first apartment complex to open here in 10 years.
In a ceremony today, the Brownsville Community Development Corporation is expected to unveil its $11.5 million project to build the 80-unit Casitas Los Olmos development off FM 3168.
The development will give many Rio Grande Valley residents who work here the choice to move into this city that struggles with a housing shortage.
On 8.7 acres, the development will feature detached “cottages” in the style of the nonprofit agency’s award-winning La Hacienda Casitas development in Harlingen.
“We wanted to create a neighborhood, not just a development,” said Jesse Miller, an architect with building community Workshop, the Dallas-based architectural firm that designed the two developments.
Miller said research helped the firm design the development.
“We asked people what they wanted to live in — it’s in single-structure affordable homes,” Miller said.
The ceremony will be held today from 11 to noon at the development site.
