Giving back: Harlingen PD donates $15,000 to charity

HARLINGEN — Police Chief Jeffry Adickes didn’t hand out any tickets at the city commission meeting Wednesday night.

Rather, he handed out two big checks.

His Run with the Heroes RGV 5/K Walk/Run in September raised $15,000 and he and members of the department spilt the funds for the two charities the police officers chose.

“The police department has been knocking it out of the park with all the generosity and their great service to the community,” said Cori Thomas, development manager for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The Ronald McDonald house and the Rio Grande Valley Special Olympics each received $7,500 checks to help their causes.

Thomas expects to offer more people a home away from home and plenty of more hot meals and tender love and care to those who need the Ronald McDonald House help.

Local business sponsors of the Run with the Heroes event each received a plaque for their generosity to help organize and fund the event.

“One of the best things in coming to Harlingen and being in public service is not about what we can get out of this community,” Adickes said. “It’s about what we can give back.”
