Newest tax statements mailed to property owners

Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre Jr. wants to inform property owners that approximately 213,992 tax statements for tax year 2019 were mailed out Oct. 1 for personal property and real estate accounts.

According to a press release, Cameron County collects taxes for 38 taxing jurisdictions, a total of 36 Street Light Districts and one irrigation district. The total levy for 2019 on all jurisdictions will be $365,565,133.97.

Taxpayers can pay their taxes online at cameroncountytax.org or at any of their nine branch offices countywide.

“ Our new facility at 835 East Levee has provided the space needed to expand the level of service we offer by adding a lobby for customers and seventeen teller windows for walk-up service in Brownsville,” the press release reads.

“ In addition, the vehicle drive-up located across the street from our Main Office, has increased from three teller lanes to five, which will greatly increase the service we can provide via the drive-up lanes.”

Yzaguirre urges taxpayers once again to take advantage of tax discounts available to property owners who pay their taxes early. Taxes for the year 2020 become due Jan. 31, 2021.

“ Payments made in the month of October will receive a 3% discount, a 2% discount during the month of November, and a 1% discount during the month of December only for those districts that offer the discounts. There are no discounts for taxes paid in January 2021,” the press release reads.

The following methods of payments are available:

>> Payments over the Internet: allows taxpayers to pay their taxes by electronic check or credit card in the convenience of their home or office over the internet 24/7 by going to www.cameroncountytax.org
