Moderate risk of rip currents forecast

HARLINGEN — National Weather Service forecasters in Brownsville have issued an alert to a moderate risk for rip currents this afternoon and evening.

Surf conditions are expected to worsen over the course of the day due to higher swells and increased winds from 21 to 25 mph.

Forecasters say beach-goers on South Texas gulf beaches should be alert to the possibility of rip currents, and that poor to average swimmers may find conditions difficult.

Forecasters advise those who do go into the water swim near a lifeguard if possible or use a non-inflatable flotation device, such as a life jacket or boogie board.

If caught in a rip current, swim with it parallel to the beach until you are released and can reach shore.

Mostly cloudy skies with high temperatures in the lower 90s are forecast. The UV Index is in the extreme range.
