Softball notes: Class 4A playoffs in full focus

Entering the final game of the regular season, there were a couple of details to iron out in District 32-4A.

Hidalgo, Zapata and Raymondville all had identical 9-4 records while Port Isabel entered Friday at 8-5, and in need of a win and help in order to clinch a playoff berth.

Rio Hondo eliminated Port Isabel from postseason contention with an 11-2 win as the Lady Cats finished district play at 13-1 and are now set to play Rockport-Fulton in a one-game playoff at 7 p.m. Friday at Alice High School.

The rest of the district, meanwhile, was sorted out. Zapata (10-4) defeated Raymondville (9-5) 11-7 and Hidalgo picked up its 10th district win with a 17-2 victory over La Feria. Hidalgo, like Zapata, sits at 10-4 and will flip Monday to decide which team will be the two and three seed.

Despite the loss to Zapata, the Lady Kats secured a playoff berth with a 9-5 record and will be the fourth seed. Raymondville will meet Orange Grove in the bi-district round with the time and location of the game yet to be decided.

Lyford Completes Perfect District Run: Lyford ended the regular season with a bang as the Lady Bulldogs completed a perfect 9-0 record in District 32-3A.

Lyford pounded away for 13 hits on 13 runs en route to a 13-1 win against Santa Rosa Friday night.

Evelyn Ortiz pitched six complete innings, fanned seven on eight hits and gave up just the one run. Sydney Bray, meanwhile, collected two hits and four RBIs in the win along with Serena Rodriguez who drew two walks and collected two hits.

Lyford now takes on Corpus Christi London in the opening round of the playoffs. Game 1 of the best-of-three series is at 6 p.m. Thursday at Lyford. Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday in Corpus Christi, but the exact location has yet to be determined. Game 3, if necessary, begins 30 minutes after Game 2.
