SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Hundreds of different kinds of birds are expected to touch down on the Island for a pit stop during their spring migration north.
“A lot of these beautiful birds you only get a chance to see during the short window of time that they pass through,” said Javier Gonzalez, nature educator for the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.
He said now is a better time than ever to visit the Island for an opportunity to see so many different kinds of birds.
More than 300 species of migratory birds stop on the Island each year, making South Padre one of the best birding locations in the Western Hemisphere.
Shorebirds, swallows, birds of prey and a variety of colorful songbirds will pass through this area in the next two months.
South Padre Island sits along a major migratory route and is a crucial refueling stop for birds during spring and fall migrations.
Two prime locations for bird watching are the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center and the Laguna Madre Nature Trail.
The Birding and Nature Center is nestled along the wetlands of the Laguna Madre. It features exhibits on the Island’s birds and other natural features, as well as a five-story viewing tower, viewing blinds and boardwalk nature trails.
“The next two months will leave us all in awe,” Gonzalez said.
