East Valley Volleyball: District 32-6A teams prep for district play

East Valley volleyball teams in District 32-6A were in action Saturday for some final tuneups before the district slate begins Tuesday.

Defending champion Brownsville Rivera will be heading into the tough slate of games with some momentum after defeating Brownsville Pace and Mission Veterans Memorial, ranked No. 18 in Class 5A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, during a tri-match Saturday. The Lady Raiders are 19-8 and won the Brownsville ISD tournament championship.

The Harlingen High Lady Cardinals (21-5) will be contenders for the district title. They earned trophies at all three of their tournaments to start the season — a gold bracket championship at the Donna ISD tourney followed by silver bracket titles at the McAllen and Sharyland tournaments. Harlingen High will be looking to bounce back after losing in straight sets (25-15, 25-19, 25-16) to McAllen Rowe on Saturday.

Rivera and Harlingen High will open the district season against each other at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Brownsville.

Harlingen South also faced Rowe on Saturday and lost. The Lady Hawks will play host to Brownsville Hanna at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hanna lost to Brownsville Veterans Memorial 25-14, 25-12, 25-9 on Saturday.

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons will travel to face the San Benito Lady Greyhounds at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Falcons lost in straight sets to TGCA Class 5A No. 6 McAllen High on Saturday.

The Lyford Lady Bulldogs are well into their District 31-3A schedule. The 10-team district got started during the second week of the season. Lyford, which won the Mission Juan Diego Tournament championship last weekend, is 7-0 in district play after Friday night’s sweep of Edinburg IDEA Quest.

Other Saturday contests included the Brownsville Pace Lady Vikings, who took two tough losses to Rivera and Mission Veterans, and Brownsville Lopez erased a two-set deficit to defeat La Feria. Brownsville Porter defeated Port Isabel and San Benito played Edcouch-Elsa.
