UTRGV right-handed pitcher Jesus Aldaz is TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Pitcher of the Week after leading the Vaqueros to 7-2 victory against New Mexico State on Sunday.
Aldaz (4-3) racked up 10 strikeouts, the second-highest total of his career, while allowing five singles and one walk during a career-high-tying six innings for the win.
After recording a 1-2-3 first inning, Aldaz allowed a leadoff single during the second and responded by retiring the next seven batters. During the fourth, after a one-out single, a stolen base and an error put a runner at third, Aldaz responded with back-to-back strikeouts as he retired the next seven batters. Aldaz had a two-hit shutout going through the first 5.2 innings and he ended each of his six innings with a strikeout.
This is the third straight week a UTRGV pitcher has earned WAC Pitcher of the Week honors after senior Kevin Stevens was recognized last week and junior J.C. Ariza was recognized the week prior.
UTRGV is back in action against future WAC opponent Incarnate Word at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg.
