The Lyford boys and girls track & field teams won the District 31-3A titles after competition Thursday and Friday at Blue Devil Stadium in Monte Alto.
The Lyford boys dominated the podiums for most events. Justin Vela, Mark Marroquin, Oscar and Osmar Martinez ran a time of 44.08 seconds in the 400 relay and a 1:32.28 in the 800 relay to claim gold in both events.
Vela also won the 100, running an 11.49, and the long jump. Marroquin took the 200 with a time of 23.44 and the triple jump. Osmar Martinez won the 300-meter hurdles.
In the 400, Lyford’s Darius Martinez cruised with a time of 53.27. Lyford’s David Caballero pulled out a close one in the 800, winning by .05 seconds over Kevin Macias of Edinburg IDEA Quest.
Weslaco IDEA Pike’s Alex Gutierrez won the 1,600 with a time of 4:43.03. Jesus Cotero of Pharr IDEA outpaced Gutierrez for gold in the 3,200 with a time of 10:24.28.
Vanguard Rembrandt’s Adrian Guzman is the district champion in the boys 110-meter hurdles.
Lyford’s David Caballero, Darius Martinez, Noah Guzman and Evan Cantu took the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:45.06.
Lyford’s Adrian Chavez won the pole vault and the high jump. Lyford also won the shot put and the discus throw. Carlos Martinez won the shot put, and Benjamin Gonzalez took the discus title.
Monte Alto’s Rachel Medrano won the 100 in 13.85 seconds. Vanguard Rembrandt’s Nicole Arias won the 200 in 27.57.
North Mission IDEA’s Melanie Mendiola won the 400 in 1:02.11 and the 800 in 2:32.33.
Pharr IDEA’s Naomi Cotero finished with double gold in the distance runs, winning the 1,600 in 5:59.76 and 3,200 in 12:39.48.
Kalie Smith of Edinburg IDEA Quest won the 100 hurdles and Lyford’s Heather May won the 300 hurdles. May also won the high jump.
Lyford’s Jeadlyn Zamarron, Lori Rocha, Avery Greenhill and Trinity Hill won the 400 relay with a time of 55.40, edging Vanguard Rembrandt.
Most of the Vanguard Rembrandt team on the 400 relay won the 800 relay. Hope Almeida, America Gallegos, Nicole Arias and April Brown turned in a time of 1:54.70.
North Mission IDEA’s Ammy Garcia, Rosa Barrera, Jasmine Pena and Melanie Mendiola cruised to victory in the 1,600 relay. The girls won by more than 20 seconds, in 4:25.99.
Monte Alto’s Crystal Vasquez won the long jump and triple jump. Weslaco IDEA Pike’s Natalie Rivera took the shot put and North Mission IDEA’s Brianna Gamez won the discus.
