The La Feria girls track team is the District 32-4A champion after a dominant performance in which they scored 268 points at Port Isabel’s Tarpon Stadium.
La Feria’s boys track team also brought home the district championship, with a score of 175 points. The Lions held off Raymondville (131) and Grulla (129).
The girls from La Feria often swept podiums, especially in the distance events. Liana Navarro cruised to victory in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, and was joined by teammates Mia Trevino and Cierra Garcia on the podium.
The boys also swept the podium for the 1,600 and 3,200. Evan Torres, Joshua Marquez and Christopher Velazquez dominated the event for La Feria.
The 800 also was swept by the La Feria girls. Liana Navarro’s time of 2 minutes, 27.69 seconds bested teammates Leandra Fernandez (2:38.07) and Mia Cerda (2:39.09). Grulla’s Mario Rodriguez finished the boys 800 with a time of 2:03.80.
La Feria’s Keira Castillo, Alicia Salinas, Kaya Dickerson and Ashley Reath won the 400 relay with a time of 51.18. Hidalgo’s Derrick Garza, Iker Muniz, Diego Esparza and Eric Solis won the boys 400 relay, finishing the race in 45.13 seconds.
La Feria’s Angelina Rodriguez pulled off a close one in the girls 100-meter hurdles, beating Raymondville’s Jacinda Salazar by .05 seconds and teammate Dakota Valdes by .27 seconds. Angelina Rodriguez also won a close race in the 300 hurdles.
In the boys 110 hurdles, La Feria’s Vincent Chapa also held off a Raymondville athlete, beating Christopher Gonzalez by .13 seconds for gold. La Feria’s Joaquin Trevino won the boys 300 hurdles.
Grulla’s Robert De la Garza beat Port Isabel’s Jaden Lopez in the 100 with a time of 11.82 seconds. Hidalgo’s Leah Heavin won the girls 100 in 13.58.
Castillo, Salinas, Dickerson and Reath teamed up again for the win in the 800 relay. The girls from La Feria finished the relay in 1:48.72.
La Feria’s Justin Rodriguez, Joaquin Trevino, Julian Torres and Samuel Guajardo beat Port Isabel’s Jaden Lopez, Daniel Zamarron, Evan Galvan and Christian Ferrone by .82 seconds to take boys 800 relay.
Raymondville’s Bryen Robles took the boys 400 in 53:07, and La Feria’s Lillian Martinez posted a 1:04.23 to win the girls 400.
Grulla’s Melanei Davila held off girls from La Feria, finishing with a 27.25 in the 200. Also from Grulla, Josue Barrera pulled out a close race against Robles by .30 seconds for gold in the boys 200.
La Feria’s Alicia Salinas, Lillian Martinez, Angelina Rodriguez and Reath won the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:22.21, 13 seconds higher than their seeding time. Grulla’s Mario Rodriguez, Omar De la Garza, Josue Barrera and Robert De la Garza took the boys 1,600 relay in 3:31.71.
Grulla’s Fatima Montes won the discus, La Feria’s Reath won the long jump and Rio Hondo’s Alyssa Silguero took the shot put.
Grulla’s Yoali De La Garza won the pole vault, Davila won the triple jump and Port Isabel’s Madison Ramos cruised in the high jump.
Hidalgo’s Dustin Earhart won the shot put and discus. Robles added to his great meet with a high jump win after clearing 6 feet even. La Feria’s Justin Rodriguez and Joaquin Trevino finished 1-2 in the long jump.
Port Isabel’s David Hernandez won the pole vault. Also from Port Isabel, Galvan and Zamarron won the triple jump together.
