LETTERS: ‘Yellow dog’ foreign term

In his letter to the editor on Aug. 9, Jose Salas tells us he doesn’t agree with the 81 million Americans who voted for the Biden/Harris ticket. In his opinion, Biden is cognitively challenged and Harris is inexperienced, incompetent and has a “panicky” laugh. Both are weak and neither of them has the judgment and instincts to know what is important. Salas also insinuates that those who voted for the Democrats are “yellow dogs,” that is, people who support any candidate affiliated with the Democratic Party regardless of qualifications. A yellow dog, he writes, is also defined as a contemptible or cowardly person or thing.

I looked up “yellow dog” in my dictionary but all I could find was “yellow dog contract,” an employer-employee contract (now illegal) by which an applicant for a job agrees not to be a labor-union member while employed.

Where Salas got the “yellow dog” definitions that he mentions above, I have no idea. But hey! This is America! To each his own!
