LETTERS: Republicans garner fire

Republicans in the House of Representatives are now proposing laws to fix banking regulations due to the recent large bank failures. These Republicans won’t tell their supporters that it was their guru Donald Trump and the Republicans in Congress who got rid of the regulations put in by President Barack Obama in the first place.

Now they’re grandstanding, wanting to make it look like they are going to fix the problem, while blaming “the government” at the same time.

Don’t be surprised if the same Republicans who got rid of the regulations won’t support any changes. It was they and their wealthy donors who got rid of the regulations in the first place.

The same thing happened with the recent train derailments. Republicans were criticizing President Biden for not doing anything to help. The reality is that Trump and the Republicans as a favor to their wealthy donors got rid of the safety regulations, again placed by the Obama administration. Now the are grandstanding, trying to blame President Biden for the problem the Trump MAGAs caused.

The Republican Party has lost all sense of dignity. Lies and misinformation are rampant in every move they make. Now they want to elect a convicted criminal with a long history of dishonesty as president. That should tell you how low the Republican Party has sunk. We, as Americans deserve better.

Anger

noted

Thanks to Louise Butler for her very explicit, detailed condemnation of the conservative side of our American coin (June 6). Although I agree completely with her description of the conservatives’ role in our present situation, I do not agree with her solution.

Anger is a valid emotion and a tool that can, if used properly, result in solutions. Being in her age group, late 70s, I believe she and I recognize the same problems that began in the generations after ours when children were not taught to respect authority, accept discipline, and value others’ lives and opinions.

The trick with using anger as a tool is to keep it from escalating into violence such as that which Donald Trump recently brought down on the U.S. Capitol and some liberal radicals have, in the past, brought to our city streets. You can validate this by remembering your children and how, when they were young, anger exploded into rage and rage into violence in an instant when they couldn’t have what they wanted.

People beyond 65 years of age with some notable exceptions were taught to control that anger or there would be consequences. For the majority under 60 not so much, since there was little control and fewer consequences, ergo, what we have today.

So, while I will stand behind Louise’s descriptions of the problem and the conservative base as needing to “grow up and get over it,” I will also advise all of those not promoting the anarchy of the conservatives to get angry and confront their radical right-wing extremist lies with truth and logic; but don’t copy them and let your anger grow into violence.
