Happy New Year to my fellow Monitor readers.
On Jan. 1, Ruben Navarrette made some suggestions as to the people who are at the border or are already in country and I agree with him on this. But here is the problem and it’s a worldly problem. Too many countries around the world are adding to their populations by allowing births to exceed their ability to have food, jobs, health care and housing for the masses. When this situation becomes unbearable, the people just leave and search for better living conditions.
Other conditions contribute to these migrations, such as wars started by despots like Putin, Castro, bin Laden and yes, America’s Afghanistan.
By using birth control around the world this problem can be rectified. I know the talking heads in the churches would put up a stiff battle over this, but the whole world would benefit.
Walls will not work because industry and innovation will trump the walls with better wire cutters, longer and lighter ladders, boring machines for tunnels and yes, Mexico will not pay for the wall.

Honor
Betty
Jan. 17 is Betty White’s birthday. And as we celebrate her life, many remember her exceptional acting career, warm personality and deep love for animals.
Betty devoted much of her life to animal activism. She spent decades serving as a member of American Humane’s board of directors, the country’s first national humane organization. Betty supported American Humane’s “No Animals Were Harmed” program, which protects animals in film and television — combining her two biggest passions. She even chaired the now 106-year-old national campaign to recognize “Be Kind to Animals Week” — the most successful humane education campaign and the oldest commemorative week in U.S. history.
Now it’s time to show our appreciation. That’s why on Jan. 6, to honor the life of such an outstanding woman, American Humane launched a campaign to recognize Jan. 17 as National Betty White Day. Each year on #BettyWhiteDay, Americans can express their appreciation for Betty’s contributions and carry on her legacy by showing love to animals in need and working to conserve earth’s magnificent species.

Biden,
schools
The wife of a Border Patrol agent commenting on Joe Biden’s visit to El Paso is correct. Does Biden even know how many Border Patrol agents have committed suicide due to his inability to have advisers who even realize what is happening at border cities?
I for one, as my Dad would ask me, “Why, when school starts, is our neighborhood full of children?” I would just roll my eyes and say to him, “Don’t even get me going; remember I lived in Matamoros. My relatives had no problem receiving their engineering degrees.”
It’s all the so-called rich citizens using our elementary, junior high and high schools, then asking for financial Help.
I graduated, worked, then paid for my college hours. We need to go back to teaching our government what we the people of Brownsville really stand for! At least we who are U.S. citizens.
