In his letter to the editor on Dec. 27, Ben Castillo tells us the turnout for the previous election was “shameful” and “disappointing.” Disappointing? Yes, but only for those who expected a big “red wave” and got only a tiny, colorless ripple.
But why shameful? Isn’t this a Republican goal? Isn’t this why they invent ridiculous voter suppression tactics — to make it difficult for some Americans to vote? Yes, this is indeed shameful.
Castillo guesses that the turnout would have been much lower if women’s rights had not been an issue. So, is Castillo praising these voters for showing up or is he disappointed that they did?
Castillo also tells us that sanctuary cities that provide humanitarian help for illegal immigrants are “equally disturbing.” Humanitarian human beings helping hurting human beings is “disturbing” to other human beings? Goodness gracious, why? Is this a question that only a psychiatrist can answer?
Castillo claims that American voters are in a “dogmatic” slumber and have yet to realize that elections have consequences. Huh? Wait, what? Is he calling the American voters “ignorant?” Ouch!
Then he rationalizes the above thought by saying, “But then again, ‘voter apathy,’ like ‘stupidity’ is forever’!”
So, what’s the message here? That those who are “apathetic” have no qualms about losing our democracy, and those who “stupidly” attacked our Capitol in an effort to destroy democracy are of the same breed? OMG — if true, this is really disturbing! Hoo-boy!

It is with extreme sadness that a read an article of Mary Yturria, an amazing and loving woman who gave freely to many organizations. Sadly, Villa Bethany Home for Girls was incorrectly described; it was exactly that, a home for girls and not unwed mothers.
Our late, beloved Sister Carmen Rodriguez with the Missionary of Jesus was the founder and her main mission was “help girls help themselves.” I proudly was one of her girls and resided at Villa Bethany for three years. I am thankful for the many beautiful people who assisted her like Mrs. Yturria and Susan Austin; they were our role models.
Many of us girls succeeded with an education, good values and loving families, which was the main reason we were there: because we could not live with our real families for various reasons.
It saddens me that when something is written it is not well researched.
Sister Carmen would announce before Mrs. Yturria would be visiting us and would remind us of her many sacrifices for us; can you imagine? She’d tell us she had attended parties and would ask for donations and would even stand on her head if they would donate what she requested.
That was devotion to a cause and brought smiles to our faces.

Congratulations to Kimball Shinkoskey for writing and The Monitor for publishing the most accurate expose of the current American political system and the effect that MAGA-type party loyalty has had on it (Jan. 3). I wish I had written that!
