Letters: Combating child hunger

Summer is right around the corner, and for kids it’s often the most joyful time of the year. But many parents and caregivers may be worrying how they’ll stretch their budget to replace the meals their kids usually eat at school.

During the school year, kids can rely on school programs like breakfast, lunch and after-school meals. But when school is out, many of those critical meals disappear, making summer a hungry time for many children.

Luckily, summer meal programs run by local schools and community groups can help fill that gap by providing healthy meals at no cost to kids and teens at school buildings as well as familiar places like parks, pools, libraries and rec centers.

No Kid Hungry’s summer meals texting service makes it quick and easy for families to find their nearest summer meal site. Parents, grandparents and caregivers can simply text “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 304-304 to find free summer meals in their community.

All Texas kids deserve to enjoy a happy, hunger-free summer so they can return to school in the fall fueled and ready to learn.

Trump backers

draw criticism

It’s been two years since America voted Trump out as president of the United States of America. And still Trump and many of his minions are still crying about a stolen election.

So where is the proof?

It’s funny how gullible some Republicans are and are hearing every word the worst foreign-policy so-called ex-president tells them. I wonder: If Trump claimed the earth was flat, would they be stupid enough to believe him?

This is the man who wanted to fire cruise missiles into Mexico to stop the cartels. This is the man who wanted to shoot protesters in the leg. This is the man who asked if there was a way to inject someone to kill the COVID-19 virus.

Wake up and smell the coffee, GOP followers, there is enough stupidity in the world.

Bible quotes

and fetuses

I knew it would just be a matter of time before atheist Hank Shriver would comment about abortion and Roe v. Wade. He is wrong when he states that “In the Christian bible, the fetus is simply a piece of property …,” and nothing else.

Here are just a couple Bible passages that show otherwise:

Psalm 127:3: “Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.”

Psalm 139:13-14: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

To quote President Ronald Reagan regarding when life begins: “The fact that they could not resolve the issue of when life begins was a finding in and of itself. If we don’t know, then shouldn’t we morally opt on the side that it is life? If you came upon an immobile body and you yourself could not determine whether it was dead or alive, I think that you would decide to consider it alive until somebody could prove it was dead. You wouldn’t get a shovel and start covering it up. And I think we should do the same thing with regard to abortion.”

Further, and regarding the “Hanks” of the abortion issue, Reagan also quoted: “Isn’t it interesting that all of those people who support the choice of abortion have already been born?” How hypocritical of Hank, don’t you think?
