Letters: Renewable energy touted

With this year’s “Invest in our Planet” Earth Day theme, it is important to highlight the vital role renewable energy plays in strengthening our economy and creating new jobs.

Texas leads the nation in clean power capacity, and for a good reason: we have the natural resources to generate this power (everything is bigger in Texas, of course).

As the operations administrator at EDP Renewables North America’s Los Mirasoles Wind Farm in the Rio GrandeValley, I can attest to the pride renewable energy workers take in powering the LoneStarState.

EDPR NA is proud to support cutting-edge technology and a dedicated team that helps power Los Mirasoles, contributing net benefits to the environment while strengthening the economy. Seventeen new jobs have been created at the wind farm, while landowners have received more than $7.5 million in lease payments since the wind farm’s first phase became operational six years ago. This wind farm has helped keep our community’s businesses running and provided families with the income to keep food on their table.

EDPR NA believes in responsible management and works with local communities to ensure its projects provide positive impacts for years to come — and projects like Los Mirasoles prove that commitment.

A sustainable future is attainable through renewable energy, and EDPR NA is proud to support this year’s Earth Day and the clean energy powering our economy.

Biblical

stories

This is in response to the article by Francisco E. Jimenez, “Size Matters,” which was published on the front page of your Jan. 7 edition. He is right that nowhere in the bible does it mention how many wile men/kings/astrologers/magi visited baby Jesus. It only says magi from eastern parts came to Jerusalem (Matthew 2:1).

On another note, they were not the ones who found Jesus when he was born, but shepherds (Luke 2:8-11). The astrologers/wise men found Jesus when he was around 2. This is why Herod had all the boys killed in Bethlehem who were 2 years and under.

The astrologers found Jesus in a house, not a manger (Matthew 2:11).

I know the truth will never be published so these are not my intentions. My intention is to let you all know that you are printing falsehoods about the bible. Shame on you!

Olympics

criticized

I just want to let the world know that this year’s Winter Olympic Games in Beijing were a total sham and a major disaster.

Supposedly, the Olympics in general are where the world’s best amateur athletes gather together to display quality sportsmanship and share the joy of international goodwill all at the same time.

Not so at the most recent Winter Games in Beijing. Take the women’s individual figure skating event, for example, where soap opera-style tensions from Russia’s figure skating team took center stage throughout the event.

It was a total shame for millions of viewers (not including yours truly) to see one teary-eyed Russian figure skater yell out these words, “I hate this sport,” when she lost out to a compatriot for the gold and ended up with the silver medal. Funny how all the other skaters who finished outside the podium didn’t break down and complain, yet they still showed allegiance to the sport.

As for figure skating’s 15-year-old “darling” Kamila Valieva, everything was going so well for her until she tested positive for an illegal substance during the Olympics. This usually means that any athlete in her position faces automatic expulsion from the Games, right? Not so, says the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which gave Valieva a free pass to continue competing in the women’s figure skating event, citing an “untendable delay” at a Swedish testing lab as a reason for letting the embattled teenager lace up her skates again. What a crock!

I, for one, am so glad that the aforementioned court’s decision of showing favoritism to let Valieva skate on landed right in their face as she came away empty-handed. As for the Russian figure skating team and their irate coach who doesn’t have an ounce of sportsmanship for her skaters on the team, I have a motto that best describes them after the drama that took place in Beijing: “We were able to finish the race, yet we’re nagging our heads off about it.”

Yeah, so much for sportsmanship and goodwill, I tell you.
