Abortion doesn’t decrease crime

In a recent letter to the editor, Hank Shiver referenced a study from 2001 linking crime and abortion. He states that “banning abortions increases crime.”

He also states that the article he referenced, printed in the Journal of Economics, states that “legalized abortion appears to account for as much a 50 percent of the recent drop in crime,”

To reach such conclusions:

-We have to assume that mankind has no free will.

-We have to assume that a civilized society believes that human sacrifice in the form of abortion is necessary to appease the Gods of the Old Testament

-We would have to assume, to give Mr. Shiver the benefit of the doubt, that the study’s findings are conclusive and repeated numerous times to confirm validity.

-We would have to assume that this country that was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, has completely lost its moral compass.

-We would to accept that relativism, the doctrine that knowledge, truth and morality exist in reaction to culture, society or historical context and are not absolute.

We would have to assume that 2.38 billion people who practice Christianity today were duped by Jesus Christ.

We can agree to disagree on many topics, Mr. Shiver; however, on the topic of abortion you are on the wrong side of history.

Response

Idiots defined. I got a chuckle out of Italo J. Zarate’s letter on April 4, titled “Who are the idiots?” I think I have the answer to his question.

Who has taken our nation from complete energy independence to one that now is begging countries who hate the United States for petroleum products? Who is directly responsible for a doubling of gasoline prices in the last year? Who, because of their inept policies, have created 8% inflation, and promised more in the future? Who directly caused the deaths of brave American soldiers and sailors because of their disastrous foreign policies concerning Afghanistan, not to mention the billions of dollars needlessly wasted there, including the reckless abandonment of highly classified equipment, now being reverse engineered by China, Russia, Iran and others? Who, at expense to our nation, has become the laughingstock of many of our allies? Who has purposely, without doubt, allowed more than 2 million illegal aliens to breach our southern border, with the resultant exorbitant costs to just provide basic amenities to these invaders? And significantly, who is going to house them, feed them, clothe them, provide medical care, etc., on an ongoing basis? Who abandoned the responsibilities of leader of the free world to the Turks, who are struggling to come to peace between Ukraine and Russia? Who has succumbed to the misguided policies of sexual derivation, to the point that our children and young adults are in doubt as to which bathroom to use? Finally, who elected as president of the United States an individual who obviously is struggling with personal health issues to the point that he is muzzled by his staff and advisers, has been required to “walk back” misstatements and verbal gaffes that are an embarrassment to our nation?

I hope this answers Mr. Zarate’s question, as I think the answers are obvious. He is right: We Americans do have the constitutional right to vote for whomever we most appreciate. And I think the 2022 mid-term and 2024 general elections will provide additional insight for him.
