Even though there were few details, at least one Cameron County school district was ready to take the millions SpaceX CEO Elon Musk offered in a tweet Tuesday morning.
Musk tweeted that he plans to donate $20 million “to Cameron County schools and $10 million to the city of Brownsville for downtown revitalization.”
“Details to come next week,” he tweeted less than two hours after his company’s latest launch of a Starship vehicle ended with the Starship SN11 prototype being destroyed during a landing attempt at SpaceX’s Boca Chica site, which the company has dubbed “Starbase.”
Teri Alarcon, superintendent of the nearby Point Isabel Independent School District, said her district was waiting for Musk to release details on the $20 million.
“If we were to receive these funds, we would utilize the funds to enhance our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program. Point Isabel ISD is able to see the launches outside every campus,” she texted The Brownsville Herald.
“Our students from elementary to high school can literally run outside every time a launch occurs! Expanding our STEM program with SpaceX’s financial support will provide our students with additional opportunities to ensure our curriculum is aligned with the work happening at SpaceX.”
In addition to Port Isabel, Point Isabel ISD serves the towns of Laguna Vista and South Padre Island as well as the unincorporated Cameron County community of Laguna Heights.
