Port Isabel, South Padre Island city facilities to require masks

As Gov. Greg Abbott’s order is in effect, cities are continuing to take precautions regarding facial coverings.

South Padre Island officials announced Monday that all city facilities will require masks, face coverings while in city buildings.

According to a SPI press release, establishments may enforce measures to protect themselves and others from the spread of COVID-19, and the public is highly encouraged to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.

“As there are mixed reactions with the state opening, we should all do what is best to keep ourselves and others safe from COVID-19,” SPI Mayor Patrick McNulty stated. “We ask all Spring Breakers to do their part and be aware of their surroundings and responsible for their actions while enjoying all that South Padre Island has to offer.”

According to the press release, all visitors are encouraged to become familiar with CDC guidelines and the city’s ordinances.

City officials provided some tips to help visitors safely enjoy and celebrate their Spring Break.

Visitors are advised to wear a mask, practice social distancing and don’t drink while underage.

The press release also advises visitors to lock up vehicles and valuables, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated while enjoying the beach and not to drive after drinking.

Visitors are also reminded not to take glass containers on the beach and to report any suspicious activity to the SPI Police Department at (956) 761-5454.

According to the press release, the city’s COVID-19 Disaster Declaration will remain in place as COVID-19 remains a threat to the public.

Port Isabel

The City of Port Isabel issued a proclamation on March 10 rescinding previous regulations and adopting the orders of the Abbott and County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr.

According to the proclamation, no one may enter or remain within the public premises of any city-owned building or park unless they are wearing a facial covering.

The proclamation states that businesses are urged to require the use of facial coverings in their facilities and to follow guidance issued by the CDC.
