Valley cities boom on sales taxes for January

The largest cities in Cameron and Hidalgo counties all showed strong gains in sales tax reimbursements for sales made in January, the state Comptroller’s Office shows.

In fact, the Valley’s performance year-over-year far outstripped statewide reimbursements, which totaled $762.5 million, down 0.5 percent from last January.

In Cameron County, San Benito led the way with a gain of 29.52 percent from a year ago, followed by La Feria (up 25.33 percernta0, Los Fresnos (up 24.63 percent), Brownsville (up 13.50 percent), South Padre Island (up 7.80 percent), Harlingen (up 6.88 percent), Rio Hondo (up 6.62 percent) and Port Isabel (up 3.96 percent).

In Willacy County, Raymondville posted a gain of 13.57 percent and Lyford was down 2.12 percent.

Weslaco led the way in Hidalgo County, up 23.73 percent for the month, followed by Pharr (up 16.72 percent), Edinburg (up 16.46 percent), McAllen (up 11.71 percent), Mission (up 11.80 percent) and Mercedes (up 0.09 percent).

The allocations are based on sales made in January by businesses that report tax monthly.
