Warrant issued for Mission man charged in fatal crash after he fails to appear

A 26-year-old Mission man accused of fatally striking a pedestrian has a warrant out for his arrest after failing to appear for a hearing on Oct. 4, court records show.

Jose Luis Nava Miranda is accused of killing 54-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia after striking him with a Chevrolet Tahoe and leaving the scene without rendering aid on May 22.

He has pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with collision involving death.

Immediate family members of the accused were also arrested the following day after it was discovered they knew of Jose Luis Nava Miranda’s alleged crime.

His dad, 52-year-old Jose Luis Garcia Miranda, mother, 51-year-old Alma Nava, and his sister, 23-year-old Samantha Nava, were all arrested for failing to report a felony charge on May 23.

At 5:23 a.m. on May 22, McAllen police responded to the 500 block of N. 29th Street in regards to an auto-pedestrian crash, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Officers found the body of Garcia in the middle of the road with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

Police found a Chevrolet emblem near Garcia’s body. They determined that the vehicle that struck the victim had fled the scene.

The affidavit goes on to say that detectives subsequently made contact with Jose Luis Nava Miranda at the 2600 block of Pecan Boulevard where he admitted to being the driver of the Tahoe and leaving the scene without stopping to help.

He added that his mother was his passenger at the time of the crash and that he told his father and sister about the crash.

When speaking to Jose Luis Garcia Miranda, he admitted to knowing that his son had struck a person and left the scene.

The trio were initially given $10,000 bonds but were later lowered to $500 each, according to jail records.

Jose Luis Nava Miranda was booked on a $100,000 bond, which was later lowered to $10,000 and he was subsequently released on July 10, according to jail records.
