A McAllen man has been indicted for the fatal wrong way crash that killed a 20-year-old woman on the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway in early June.
A Cameron County grand jury indicted Hugo Lara, 48, on Aug. 21. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, but court records indicate an attorney has filed a waiver of arraignment.
Lara is accused of killing Maria Desiree Enriquez on June 2.
He’s charged with intoxication manslaughter.
Lara is accused of being intoxicated when he drove westbound on the eastbound lane of the causeway in a 2023 white Ford F-150 when he crashed into Enriquez’s 2008 red Kia.
She had been celebrating her graduation.
The crash happened around 1:45 a.m.
The family has since filed a lawsuit against Lara, which said he has two prior DWI arrests and an arrest for assaulting two police officers.
According to the lawsuit, Lara was out drinking at a friend’s birthday party on the Island.
“In a highly intoxicated state, Lara decided to drive back, taking his 2023 Ford Pickup the wrong way on the causeway. He drove westbound into the eastbound lanes, colliding head-on with Mariah’s 2008 Kia passenger car and causing fatal injuries to the young woman,” the family’s attorney said previously in a statement.
Lara remains free on a $350,000 bond.
