The wait is nearly over.

Less than a week after announcing the progress of the interchange construction, the Texas Department of Transportation has announced that the new Direct Connect 3 from Edinburg to Harlingen is officially opening this weekend.

The transition to the new connection will be done overnight beginning late Friday until early Saturday morning.

In light of the connector opening traffic, traveling south of Nolana Avenue in Pharr on southbound I-69C/US 281 will be directed left toward the flyover which will merge onto eastbound I-2 to Harlingen. On the other hand, those traveling westbound toward McAllen will use the Direct Connect 4.

The new connector is now two lanes wide allowing for easier traffic flow in the area.

Although the long-awaited connector is finally opening this will cause various closures in the area. According to the release, the Sugar Road turnaround at I-2 will be permanently closed while the I-2 access ramp between Sugar Road and Cage Boulevard will be closed temporarily.

This isn’t the only good news to look forward to as TxDOT is preparing to open yet another connector next month.

The McAllen to Edinburg connector is scheduled to open in July.
