BROWNSVILLE — Many residents here united in prayer and remembrance during a candlelight vigil at Linear Park Monday, in homage to eight Venezuelans who lost their lives on Sunday.

At 8:30 a.m. Sunday, an SUV driver slammed into a group waiting at a bus stop along North Minnesota Avenue across from Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center.

The driver, later identified as 34-year-old George Alvarez, is well known to police, has an extensive rap sheet and is being held on $3.6 million in bonds at the Brownsville city jail, Police Chief Felix Sauceda said during a press conference Monday.

Those in attendance stood in silence in honor of those who lost their lives on that early Sunday morning.

Four Venezuelans place wooden cross in the ground, Tuesday, May 9, 2023, in Brownsville, that they built and hand-painted in homage to the eight Venezuelans who lost their lives when the driver of an SUV killed eight people when it slammed into a bus stop. Authorities believe the driver, 34-year-old George Alvarez of Brownsville, lost control after running a red light Sunday morning, May 7, and plowed into a crowd outside a migrant center that has for years been a hub for migration across the U.S.-Mexico border.
