The Brownsville Police Department has identified the man accused of crashing into a group of people waiting for a bus Sunday morning, killing eight and leaving several in critical condition.
Police previously confirmed that George Alvarez, 34, is a resident of Brownsville. The police department did not disclose whether the act was intentional or unintentional.
The crash occurred at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, when the Range Rover Alvarez was driving crashed into a group of people waiting for a bus on North Minnesota Avenue across from a community shelter that assists migrants seeking asylum. The crash left eight dead and nine injured.
During a press conference Monday morning, police said Alvarez has been formally charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and he received bonds totalling $3.6 million.
