HARLINGEN – The “Bending the Blues for Charity” concert is set for Saturday, April 22, presented by Knights of Columbus Council 2785. The event featuring the Rick Lugo band begins at 8 p.m. at the council hall at 1701 E. Harrison Ave.

Rick Lugo is a San Benito native based in Austin, and music lovers can attend the concert for only $10 at the door.

“The proceeds are going to Special Olympics to help them with whatever it is that they do. We just hand them a check,” said Edgar Martinez, Grand Knight of the Council.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal organization founded in 1882.

“We don’t push religion too much. We mainly focus on charity, period,” Martinez said. “The name alone, Knights of Columbus, is us doing our mission. We’re working under the Church, and we’re pushing our charity. And that’s it.”

The Knights of Columbus Council 2785 regularly holds events for several charitable causes, including local food pantries and Habitat for Humanity.

“Every event we do is important, and this is going to be the one that jump starts our funds work,” Martinez said. “I don’t know how big it is going to be, but the bigger the better. We’re trying to help out people with needs and disabilities, and that’s what Special Olympics is all about.”

The Rick Lugo Band’s website says it is a “unique blend of musicians that are dedicated to their hot brand of Texas-based style of music.”

The band was named one of the top 10 Latin Contemporary Bands in the Austin Chronicle Music Poll.
