A college football legend will be helping Weslaco Independent School District seniors celebrate the next step in their education Friday.

Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Vince Young will be the guest speaker for the Weslaco ISD College Decision Day event, which will be a celebration for seniors from Weslaco High School, Weslaco East High School and the CTE Early College High School as they announce their college destinations or military enlistments.

“College decision day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate important decisions that are made by our high school students. We want to lift up and celebrate a different kind of milestone for our high school seniors,” Weslaco High School College Readiness Specialist Caridad Salinas said in a news release.

Young will be on-hand to celebrate with students at the Susan M. Peterson Performing Arts Center at Central Middle School, which is located at 471 E. 6th St., at 9 a.m.

The celebrated quarterback played football for the Texas Longhorns for three successful seasons, in which he led the team to an undefeated season and the 2006 NCAA National Championship.

He also played six seasons in the NFL for the Tennessee Titans, earning 2006 Rookie of the Year, as well as with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Friday’s event offers an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of WISD graduating seniors as they take steps toward higher education or the military.

“Every student who commits to going to and completing college or military deserves to be celebrated just like a celebrity or star athlete,” Salinas said in the release. “Our students are making a commitment to pursue college or the military and this inspires others to reach higher.”

The event will be livestreamed.
