Sadly, many of the unseen injuries suffered by our Vietnam veterans went undiagnosed and weren’t understood by our medical community, or citizenry, as they are now. We want Vietnam veterans to know that we are here for them.

HARLINGEN — The Veterans Administration is honoring Vietnam Veterans and their families Wednesday at the Harlingen VA Outpatient Clinic.

The ceremony from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the clinic at 2106 Treasure Hills Blvd. will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, from 1965 to 1975.

The nation’s commemoration will continue through Veterans Day 2025.

“As authorized by Congress and on behalf of the nation, we are doing what should have been done 50 years ago — thanking and honoring our Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice just as America did for the veterans of World War II and Korea,” Hugo Martinez, the VA’s public affairs officer, stated.

Today, more than six million American veterans who served during the period are alive, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Like veterans returning from today’s battlefields, those who served in Vietnam came home with both physical and unseen injuries of war,” Martinez said. “Sadly, many of the unseen injuries suffered by our Vietnam veterans went undiagnosed and weren’t understood by our medical community, or citizenry, as they are now. We want Vietnam veterans to know that we are here for them.”
