The Mission Police Department arrested a man following a traffic stop on Monday where officers discovered nearly 44 pounds of fentanyl inside a hidden compartment in the vehicle.

Investigator Art Flores said on Friday that the traffic stop happened at approximately 3 p.m. on Monday on Shary Road at the Frontage Road by the expressway.

The unidentified driver appeared nervous so Mission police called a K-9 unit, which alerted to the vehicle, Flores said.

The investigation revealed the hidden compartment where police found 18 bundles of fentanyl weighing approximately 43.9 pounds.

Chief Cesar Torres said the estimated value of the fentanyl is more than $600,000.

The department declined to identify the man who was arrested.
