Mexican national arrested for attempting to smuggle nearly 95 pounds of meth

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a Mexican national who attempted to enter the country after they discovered over 90 pounds of meth concealed in the tractor-trailer he drove.

Luis Angel Cavazos-Perez, who was born in 1983, was charged with illegal importation of a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine, that totaled nearly 95 pounds.

According to the criminal complaint, Homeland Security Investigations in McAllen received a request from the CBP Office of Field Operations on Monday regarding a Mexican citizen attempting to enter the country with methamphetamine.

“During primary inbound inspection, Perez presented a manifest of tools,” the complaint said. “(CBP) referred Perez and the tractor-trailer to secondary inspection for further inspection.”

It was there that the officers discovered two speaker boxes in the cab of the tractor-trailer which contained over 94 pounds of a crystalline substance.

Officers field tested the substance which was presumptive positive for the properties and characteristics of methamphetamine.

During an interview, Perez stated that he was hired by an unknown person in Mexico to transport the speaker boxes which he knew contained drugs.

Perez is set to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge J Scott Hacker for his detention hearing Friday.
