Edinburg father sentenced to 10 years probation for killing son in crash

Jose Alonzo Quintanilla

A 49-year-old Edinburg man pleaded guilty Monday to intoxication manslaughter with a motor vehicle for the 2018 death of his 11-year-old son, court records show.

Jose Alonzo Quintanilla was convicted of causing the death of his son, Javen Quintanilla, when he crashed the vehicle he was operating, which his son occupied, on Sept. 19, 2018.

Quintanilla was sentenced to 10 years probation and was ordered to serve 240 hours of community service.

The plea comes with a slew of rules Quintanilla must follow or else he could face prison time, which consist of, but aren’t limited to, avoiding alcohol and drugs, supporting any dependents, submitting to random testing for alcohol or controlled substances, and much more.

He must also submit to a period of weekend confinement in the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center for 120 days beginning May 6 and will receive three days jail credit for each weekend served.
