‘Greatly missed’: McAllen mayor pays tribute to sister, mother killed in Dimmit County

The McAllen mayor’s mother and sister died Friday night in a car crash in Dimmit County.

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Rene Cordova said the crash happened at approximately 7:01 p.m. a little north of Carrizo Springs on U.S. 83.

There were two vehicles involved, a 2014 Dodge Avenger and a Toyota Rav 4.

Cordova said three people died, including Veronica Villalobos Barajas, 53, and Elida Villalobos, 84.

Veronica is McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos’ sister and Elia is his mother.

“From all of the Villalobos family, our heartfelt gratitude to each one of you who has reached out to us with your condolences, well wishes, calls, texts and prayers during this darkest of times for our family,” the mayor said Sunday. “It’s wonderful to know that so many people care and make this horrible nightmare just a little easier to deal with.

“Our beloved mother and sister will be greatly missed. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

The third person who died in the crash was in the Dodge and is 30-year-old Jerika Pichardo.
