The National Weather Service in Brownsville has issued a red flag warning until 5 p.m. Thursday for South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley.
A cold front driving through from the north is being accompanied by gusty winds and low humidity, creating critical wildfire conditions.
The warning covers inland Cameron, inland Willacy and inland Kenedy counties, as well as Hidalgo and Brooks counties.
High winds, low humidity and cured, dry fuels means any wildfire that starts could quickly and erratically spread.
In addition, a gale warning is in effect for Gulf of Mexico waters until 6 a.m. Friday.
