Have you ever wanted to help name a baby giraffe?

Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville is giving you a chance by participating in an online selection process to choose the name of a baby giraffe born at the zoo last year.

The new calf, a male, was born to Rocket and is anxiously ready to be named as his first birthday approaches, GPZ said in a news release.

Zoo staff have selected six names, and the public is invited to choose one name out of the six that will be given to the baby giraffe that was born last February.

The suggested names are Astro, Comet, Orbit, Jett, Apollo and Loki.

“He is thriving and doing well. This juvenile giraffe is very playful and loves to get into everything. He loves to squish boxes, chase ducks and drink out of the water hose just like some of us did as kids,” states Vivian Padilla, Zookeeper at the Gladys Porter Zoo, in the news release.

If Rocket’s name sounds familiar, it should.

She is the inspiration behind a book titled, “Rocket the Space Giraffe,” which is about a giraffe that explores the moon and the stars in her rocket ship along with her best friend Cosmo, who is a ring-tailed lemur.

The voting for the new calf begins Wednesday, Feb. 15 on the GPZ website and will be open for one week.

The winning name will be announced via the Zoo’s social media platform on the baby giraffe’s birthday, which is Feb. 23.
