An Edinburg man accused of murdering a 24-year-old man at his residence last year is set to be arraigned Monday morning.
Alphie Howard Slough was arrested at a San Juan Stripes convenience store after he allegedly shot and killed Edinburg resident Ricardo Guzman on Oct. 22, 2022.
According to a news release, deputies with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Stripes at the corner of Earling and Raul Longoria roads at around 2:07 a.m. where he communicated that he wanted to surrender to authorities.
The shooting occurred in rural Edinburg in the 2700 block of Alberta Road at around 2:32 a.m. that Saturday which had deputies responding to a welfare check.
“A witness advised that gunshots were heard from inside the residence and a male walked outside and collapsed on the driveway,” a release stated.
Deputies found Guzman lying on the driveway with gunshot wounds when they arrived.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
The sheriff’s office didn’t mention in the release how Slough communicated with deputies about his wanting to surrender at the Stripes.
Slough has a series of drug-related arrests dating back to 2007.
He remains jailed at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
