An Edcouch man is in custody after he allegedly shot at a La Villa resident who chased him down in his vehicle before the alleged shooter crashed into a pole on an empty lot.
Miguel Angel Becerra, 19, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct after he allegedly shot at a man’s home in La Villa and then again at his vehicle after Becerra crashed into a pole.
Police arrested Becerra on Jan. 13.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Edcouch police were dispatched to the Koko Loko convenience store located at 304 Llano Grande at about 6 p.m. on Dec. 12 in reference to a person being shot at.
Sgt. Juan Quintana made contact with the complainant who stated he went outside after hearing some gunshots outside his home.
He added that his neighbors told him “that an old Ford truck had shot towards his house.”
The man then got into his car in order to pursue the truck and eventually entered Edcouch city limits as he drove on Mile 17 going westbound.
He then called the Edcouch police department to notify them that he was pursuing the vehicle that shot at his home.
“(He) then stated that the truck began driving at a high speed southbound on N FM 1015 while he was following it,” the affidavit said. “(He) stated that the truck then made a sharp left turn on Gutierrez St. and crashed into a pole on an empty lot located at 100 E. Gutierrez St.”
According to the complainant, the driver then exited the vehicle, raised a pistol over the driver’s side door and shot about eight times in his direction.
Later, an officer discovered an abandoned blue 1991 Ford F-150 truck on 300 E. Garza St. which was about three blocks away from where the shooting happened.
A witness later approached the officer and told him that she spoke to Becerra who said he was being chased by someone.
Gonzalez added that she saw a passenger exit the vehicle and another person get out from the truck bed through the tailgate.
She said both left running.
One officer noted that he had pulled the blue F-150 a few days prior for speeding and issued a citation to the driver, who was Becerra.
At the scene of the shooting, police located ten 9mm casings scattered in the area.
Inside the vehicle, they found a baggie with white powdery substance in the driver door panel compartment and a 12 round 9mm magazine loaded with 12 9mm full metal jacket rounds in the driver side door panel.
In the bed of the truck, police discovered 13 Brass Aguila 9mm casings.
Becerra remains jailed at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on $550,000 in bonds.
