HARLINGEN — Want to help out some young Aggie’s with their expenses?

Sponsor a team — or join a team — for the annual 12th Man Scholarship Golf Tournament coordinated by RGV Aggie Moms’ Club.

“We need 30 three-person teams to make this a successful tournament,” said Sandra Tovar, president of RGV Aggie Moms.

“A business or group of golfers can sponsor a team for $500, and each player will receive a shirt, goody bag, cart, green fees, breakfast and lunch, plus a few other items,” Tovar said.

The RGV Aggie Moms’ Club is a nonprofit organization that supports parents as their child maneuvers the “ins and outs” of attending Texas A&M University at either McAllen, Galveston or College Station. The scholarship is available only to Valley students attending Texas A&M University.

“We awarded 20 students $1,200 scholarships and $100 to 10 organizations for this school year,” Tovar said.

Laura Macmanus was one of those recipients.

When the 2019 graduate of Harlingen High School received the scholarship, it brought significant relief to her.

“The scholarship they gave me covered books and a little bit of my rent as well,” said Macmanus, who is studying architectural engineering at Texas A&M University in College Station.

The scholarship made a huge difference for her.

“It allowed me to focus on classes instead of worrying about trying to find money somewhere else,” she said. “It’s very helpful, and it’s a pretty easy scholarship to apply for.”

The $1,200 scholarship simplified things for Lusinda Garcia, 19, a political science major at Texas A&M University in College Station.

“I think with most college kids money is tight,” said Garcia. “The last thing you want to do is be worrying about how you’re going to pay for your tuition on top of having to study for all these classes and just managing finances in general. It’s extremely taxing, especially being so far away from home and being on your own for the first time.”
