As Rio Grande Valley residents prepare for inclement weather, officials with the McAllen Public Utility are urging residents to take extra precautions to avoid pipes from freezing.

According to a city of McAllen news release, frozen pipes can cause water service interruptions. Officials are recommending the following solutions including thawing out the main waterline by using portable heaters, hair dryers or similar heating devices.

In order to protect pipes from freezing, officials are reminding residents to cover exposed water lines especially backflow devices while also leaving indoor water fixtures dripping slightly.

Officials are also reminding residents to bring plants and pets indoors to avoid the harsh weather, and be sure to check in with elderly relatives and neighbors.

If one goes out between Thursday and Saturday, residents are being reminded to wear well-insulated clothes, keep their faces warm and continue to wear a face mask.

When using heaters officials are reminding residents to keep them away from flammable objects, do not connect them to extension cords and avoid using generators indoors.

In case of emergencies, contact the McAllen Public Utility customer service line at (956) 681-1717.
