Seven more die to COVID-19 while counties report 200 new cases

Seven more people died due to COVID-19 throughout Hidalgo and Cameron counties while county officials reported more than 200 new cases this week.

Hidalgo County reported five more residents died from COVID-related complications which raised the total number of people who died from COVID to 4,027, according to news releases issued by the county this week.

The deceased included a Mission man in his 40s, a Pharr woman in her 60s, two McAllen men over 70, and a Weslaco man over 70.

Two of the five deceased residents were not vaccinated.

The county also reported 115 new cases this week, including 56 confirmed cases and 59 probable cases.

There were also 30 new cases among school staff and 47 new cases among students this week.

COVID-19 hospitalizations throughout Hidalgo County slightly increased this week, starting off with 31 total COVID hospitalizations at the beginning of the week.

The 31 patients included 29 adults and two pediatric patients. Of the adults, eight were in intensive care units.

By the end of the week, COVID hospitalizations went up to 34 which included 30 adults and four pediatric patients. Of the adults, nine were in the ICU.

Cameron County health officials reported two COVID-related deaths this week which raised their total number of COVID fatalities to 2,309.

Both the deceased individuals were fully vaccinated. They included a San Benito woman in her 20s and a Port Isabel woman in her 70s.

There were also another 87 new COVID cases this week in Cameron County of which 32 were confirmed, 52 were probable, and three were self reported cases.
