The 39-year-old Edinburg man who surrendered to police was charged with murder and received a $1 million bond.
Alphie Howard Slough was arraigned Friday afternoon by Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace J.J. Peña.
The murder charge stems from allegations that Slough shot and killed 24-year-old Ricardo Guzman.
Hidalgo County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a home in the 2700 block of Alberta Road in rural Edinburg about 2:32 a.m. on Oct. 22. When they arrived, witnesses told authorities that they heard gunshots coming from inside the residence and later saw Guzman collapse on the driveway.
Slough, who had initially fled the scene, surrendered to authorities at a Stripes convenience store located on the corner of Earling and Raul Longoria roads in San Juan shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday.
He remained in jail on Friday.
