4,000 dead: Hidalgo County hits another grim COVID-19 milestone

Hidalgo County surpassed more than 4,000 deaths due to COVID-related complications among their residents with their report of three additional deaths on Tuesday.

County officials reported three more residents died due to COVID-19, one of whom was not vaccinated, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

The deceased residents included a McAllen man in his 30s, an Edinburg man in his 60s and a Weslaco woman over 70 years old.

Their deaths raise Hidalgo County’s total recorded deaths due to COVID to 4,001.

To mark the grim milestone, the county released a memorial video, its fourth, showing some of the victims through photos submitted by friends and relatives.

“Each of these deaths is a tragedy,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said in a statement. “But our hope is that this latest video memorial shows our family, friends and neighbors as they lived, which is how our community should remember all of these people.”

Nearly 600 photos were submitted, according to the county.

“We are proud to honor the memory of our residents,” Cortez said. “But we must remember that these video memorials represent only a fraction of those who succumbed as a result of this terrible disease.”

The county also reported 370 new cases including 139 confirmed and 231 probable cases.

Additionally, there were 11 new cases among school staff and 53 new cases among students.

As of Monday, the county reported 47 patients were hospitalized due to COVID, including 30 adults and 17 pediatric patients.

Of those, there were seven adults in intensive care units.
