Mother, baby girl die in Brownsville rollover crash

A rollover accident took the lives of a mother and her infant daughter this weekend in Brownsville.

The accident, which remains under investigation, happened shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday at FM 511 and just before Hugh Emerson Road, said Sgt. Billy Killebrew, spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department.

The 18-year-old mother and her 1-month-old daughter, who would have turned 2 months old Tuesday, were ejected from the vehicle, Killebrew said. Both had been travelling in the back seat of the vehicle.

The mother and daughter are believed to be Brownsville residents who were returning from Port Isabel.

“We are thinking right now that she (the mother) was not wearing a seatbelt and that the actual car seat was ejected also so it might not have been placed properly in the vehicle,” Killebrew said. “She (the baby) was in the car seat, but the car seat flew out.”

The 17-year-old driver of the vehicle said he fell asleep while he was driving when the vehicle rolled over, Killebrew said.
