The National Weather Service in Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley has issued a special weather statement for portions of central Cameron and southeastern Willacy counties until 2 p.m.
The NWS reports that at 1:31 p.m., Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Palmer Laasko Elementary, or near Laureles. This storm was nearly stationary.
The NWS reports winds in excess of 30 mph are anticipated. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.
Locations impacted include Rio Hondo, Laureles, Brownsville, Palmer Laasko Elementary, Library Memorial Middle School, Lozano, Rio Hondo High School, Downs Elementary School, Bayview and Korngay Private Airport.
The NWS said, if outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.
Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding, the NWS reports. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
Frequent cloud to ground lightning is also occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
