SAN BENITO — Family and friends are shattered after San Benito school district athletic trainers Robert Garza and Raul Ramos were killed Friday in a two-car morning crash.

A delivery truck traveling northbound struck the car in which Garza and Ramos were traveling as it tried to make a U-turn at about 7:30 a.m. in the 27000 block of State Highway 345, reports said.

While Garza worked as San Benito High School’s athletic trainer, Ramos worked as Veterans Memorial Academy’s trainer.

“We lost great men today,” said Dan Gomez, San Benito Consolidated Independent School District Athletic Director and Head Football Coach.

“The San Benito CISD sports and educational family were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of athletic trainers,” the district stated. “They were valued members of our district’s athletic department and will be greatly missed by both colleagues and students.”

Counselors will be available to both students and staff beginning at 8 a.m. Monday at the San Benito High School sports complex.

“We were deeply saddened to learn about the death of two of our very own,” interim Superintendent Theresa Servellon stated.

“We extend our most sincere and deepest condolences to the Garza and Ramos families. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.”

The accident remains under investigation.
