Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation President and CEO Josh Mejia has taken a job with another economic development organization in the Rio Grande Valley and will be stepping down from the BCIC post he’s held since Nov. 4, 2016.
The organization he’s joining, which is not in Brownsville, will make an announcement on June 1, he said.
“I won’t be moving too far away,” Mejia told the Brownsville Herald Friday morning.
He noted BCIC had “completely changed” during his tenure.
“I feel like it’s defined a new way of practicing economic development that’s equitable and at the same time positioning the organization to have more financial competitiveness in terms of being able to sustain a larger amount of projects, being able to help out the community, entrepreneurs and such,” Mejia said.
“It’s changed night and day for sure. I’ve been privileged enough to be at the helm of the organization, but at the end of the day it’s been a team effort, and that includes everybody from the board to elected officials and stakeholders on the ground.”
His resignation was accepted on May 26 by BCIC’s board, which also immediately named Mejia’s successor: Cori Peña, currently BCIC’s director of community development.
“She’s undergoing contract negotiations right now,” Mejia said. “Her first day would officially be the 29th of June.”
