McAllen ISD’s board of trustees approved a bid in the amount of $1,958,500 for improvements to a McAllen High School synthetic football field and other track and field improvements last week.
Funds will go toward a new 8-lane all-weather track with artificial turf on the practice field, district spokesperson Mark May wrote in an email Tuesday.
“It will be used for football and soccer,” he wrote. “It will also be used to host middle school football and soccer games. It is located along 23rd St., just west of the tennis courts. It is also west of the building.”
The area currently has a cinder track and a grass field, May added.
According to materials presented to the board, the administration recommended approving Hellas Construction, Inc. for the project.
The Austin-based company specializes in sports construction and lists entities like the Dallas Cowboys among its clientele.
According to the board materials, 131 vendors were invited to submit proposals for the project. The five vendors that responded included three no bids, and Hellas was recommended by the Facilities, Maintenance, & Operations team.
That $1,958,500 contract price includes an $80,000 contingency and was budgeted through the district’s general fund, the materials said.
The project is expected to be ready by October, weather permitting.
