Region One taps former PSJA superintendent as executive director

The Region One Education Service Center Board of Directors voted to choose Daniel King, former PSJA ISD superintendent, as the area’s new executive director earlier this month.

King will start May 2.

“I would like to thank the Region One Board of Directors and Commissioner Morath for placing their trust in me,” King said in a news release. “I look forward to collaborating with area Superintendents and School Boards and together with the team at Region One to move forward and build upon the foundation that has earned this region’s school systems a stellar reputation. King noted that schools are working to overcome the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are at a critical juncture in education as we work to recover from the impact of the pandemic on the students, families, teachers, and school staff we serve,” he said. “We will need everyone’s ideas and teamwork to meet this challenge. I am ready.”

The permanent executive director position was left vacant when Cornelio Gonzalez retired at the end of January 2021.

Eduardo Cancino served as interim for about five months, and was replaced as interim by Judith Solis in August 2021.

A release from Region One cites King’s 42 years in public education and 20 years in superintendency posts, adding that King has most recently been involved in transforming leadership teams in areas of organizational performance, leadership development and executive coaching.

“Dr. Danny King is a proven educational leader,” Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath said in the release. “I am both encouraged and excited by the ESC 1 Board of Director’s decision to appoint him as the region’s next Executive Director. Dr. King will generate additional confidence in ESC 1, offer expanded LEA supports, and will lead to an improvement in student outcomes across the region.”

Region One serves over 422,000 students and educators in eight South Texas counties, the release said, and works to assist school districts in improving student performance and district efficiency while implementing initiatives assigned by the state.

“The selection of an Executive Director is a tremendous responsibility, and the Board of Directors is extremely pleased with our choice of Dr. King,” Sonia A. Falcon, Region One ESC Board Chairperson, said. “In addition to overseeing the daily operations of the education service center, the Executive Director plays an integral role in collaborating with school leaders throughout the region to ensure that they are provided the support and professional development opportunities so our students may achieve academic success.”

Falcon called King “a proven leader with proven results” and said she was “confident” in his ability to navigate the challenges that lie ahead.
